Abstract

In the present study an experiment was carried out to assess the effects of herbicide alachlor on physiological parameters of maize (NAC-6002) cultivar to standardize the optimum concentration which is less effect on seedling growth. The results of present study clearly showed all the parameters were found to be significantly differing from one another. Chlorophyll a (80%, 75.5%, 66%, 51%), chlorophyll b (80%, 72.7%, 67%, 58%), total chlorophyll (71%, 68.5%, 70%, 71%) and carotenoid (84%, 80%, 79%, 70%) were found to be decreased drastically as the concentration of the herbicide alachlor increased from 4 to 15th day seedlings at 10 PPM concentrations respectively. The total protein (18% and 63%), total carbohydrate (23% and 71%) total phenol ( 55% and 18% ) content was found to be significantly decreased and increased in root-shoot axis and in endosperm of the maize seedlings from 4 to 15 days old seedlings at higher concentrations (10 PPM) when compared to control. Out of all the different treatments 2.5 PPM concentrations was found to be more appropriate concentration compared to other concentrations. These results reveal that mobilization of seed reserve is impaired may be due to herbicide treatment by disturbing the activity of enzymes necessary for above parameters.
